thepowerpuffgirlsrock asked: What are your thoughts on the North Carolina passing an anti-LGBT bill yesterday?

thrashcangay:

iwriteaboutfeminism:

I hadn’t heard about that, so thank you for letting me know.

I did some reading on it, and it’s absolutely horrible. There a good article up on Huffington Post for anyone interesting in learning more.

What the bill does:

1) Makes it illegal for any city, county, or business in North Carolina to adopt a non-discrimination policy that protects the rights of gay or transgender people.

2) Makes it illegal for any city or county in North Carolina to raise the minimum wage.

3) Gets rid of current anti-discrimination protections for veterans and makes it illegal for new anti-discrimination protections to be put in place.

North Carolina’s Republican Governor, Pat McCrory, has already signed the bill into law. It passed the state House 83-25, and unanimously in the Senate 32-0, because all of the Democratic Senators staged a walk-out to express their disgust with the bill.

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat who is running for Governor against McCrory this November, quickly spoke out against the new law.

“North Carolina is better than this,” Cooper said in a video statement. “Discrimination is wrong, period. That North Carolina is putting discrimination into the law is shameful.”

This law demonstrates how vitally important local and state politics are. Even if a Democrat becomes our next President, we still have state-level issues like this to deal with that a President, any President, has no control over. It’s just as impactful on our everyday life to put effort into voting for Governor and state senators and representatives who will represent our ideals of equity and justice.

I’d expect that there is a ton of organizing happening in North Carolina right now that you can be a part of to work to ensure that Governor McCrory and the state legislators who voted for this bill will be voted out of office during this November’s election.

Here are a few organizations you can team up with to make change in North Carolina. If anyone knows of more, please share!

Equality North Carolina

LGBT Center of Raleigh

Campus Pride (based in Charlotte, NC)

Triad Equality Alliance (based in Greensboro, NC)

Ashville LGBTQ Resource Center

ACLU of North Carolina

There was a large protest outside the governor’s mansion in Raleigh and at least 6 people have been arrested. If you don’t know how to help us out here in NC donating to their bail fund is a small step! http://durhamsolidaritycenter.org/bondfund/

I don’t think people realize how much of an impact this kind of support can have, I don’t think everyone knows what these little things can mean to us.
It may just be me, I don’t know. But every single time I see this on my dash or on someone’s blog or anywhere else, I kind of just breathe a sigh of relief. That’s one more person who cares. That’s one more person who doesn’t hate me.
Because it means so much, especially when all the media is spewing out is that I’m a terrible person and no one wants people like me near them. It means so much because I’m tired of people who won’t sit next to me in class, or who choose to join the longer line at the grocery store because they don’t want to be beside me and my family. It means so much when I have to lift my head any time someone says the words Islam or Muslim because I’m scared that they’ll say something that’ll hurt, when I have to pay attention to the news because who knows what so and so is saying now, who knows which of my people are being attacked now, who knows what’s going to happen to me now.
It means so much because I’ve been given the idea that the world is against me. And a huge part of it may be, but at least I’ve been reminded that some of it, just a small group of people, acknowledges that I’m a person too. That people like me are just that, people.
Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. But now you do, so thank you for believing that I’m human when so many people don’t.

peak tumblr for me was getting unfollowed by like 30 people for observing how many men hate cats and wondering if it has anything to do with the independence of cats and the love of control that men possess

look me in the eye n tell me if you ask
a man if he wants a cat he’d not go “nah I want a staffy/other masc dog breed” and like if they DO like cats it’s always “yeah he’s in touch with his feminine side”

Also important to note that the funding behind cat protection including shelters, TNR etc is much lower than what is gotten by dog specific groups. The laws protecting cats are also much worse in a lot of countries, especially in regards to feral cats. Campaigns to adopt cats from shelters are also less widespread than the same campaigns about dogs.

I think a lot of the reasons that many men dislike cats is due to misogyny.

Shelters and charities etc. for women get way more funding than those for men, even when you’re just looking at male donors.

If cats were being less funded because of misogyny, one would predict that women were being less funded. It would be a very odd type of misogynist to neglect men in need, help women in need, then take out all of their woman-hating on cats (which aren’t actually women).

In America feral cats are an invasive species that kill millions of native birds every years. Audubon counts reinforce the dropping bird populations. Feral dogs generally don’t do this sort of predation, but are seen by humans as a greater threat. Feral cat laws in many countries are linked to their invasive nature, like mongooses in Hawaii.

Projecting gender relations on pet species preference is beyond silly anyways. Differences are small, and women prefer dogs at about the same rate as men do. And yet more cats than dogs are owned in the US. (And many dog breeds are independant - most of the most “macho” are incredibly stubborn and operate on their own terms. Most bully breeds are like this.)

This what we talking about in 2016 fam?

hating cats is misogyny version 2.0
